The Financial Services sector has come through many ups and downs over the past decade due to market uncertainty. Firms have also come under massive scrutiny from the Regulators and have had to invest heavily in Compliance functions to manage/mitigate risk.
However, Financial Services continues to be a very attractive industry to develop a long-term profession in and also offers a very clear career path.
Many firms will offer their employees the opportunity to study towards a Certificate, Diploma or to obtain Chartered status in Financial Planning.
This allows individuals to develop themselves academically, alongside gaining hands-on experience in the workplace. Through completing qualifications, this can open more doors for individuals in terms of career development, ultimately working towards being a qualified Financial Adviser.
Your day-to-day role will consist of various activities to assist individuals in protecting their wealth. This can include preparing for retirement, purchasing properties and planning for their children’s future.
To be a part of pivotal moments in a client’s life and making these happen can be extremely rewarding. You are the person they trust with all of their sensitive and confidential information. Client’s see firms as their ‘business partner’ and the relationships built between employees and their clients can be passed down throughout many generations.
The route many individuals go down when they first start working within the industry would typically be; Financial Services Administrator, Trainee Paraplanner, Paraplanner, Senior Paraplanner and Financial Adviser.
However, this is not ‘set in stone’ and firms can have other functions operating within the sector depending on which services they provide.
As previously mentioned, Regulators are very hot on Compliance which has encouraged firms to invest heavily in this area. In turn, this has created more roles such as Compliance Assistants, Training and Competency Managers and Investment Managers.
