Our client is a large and well-established local government organisation delivering a wide range of essential public services across the borough.

The Role

The organisation is seeking a Business Support Officer to provide a comprehensive range of professional, technical and administrative support services within its Planning function. Working as part of a flexible Business Support team, the post holder will contribute to the delivery of efficient, customer-focused and innovative Planning services, supporting both operational delivery and wider business continuity objectives.

This is a part-time role (22.5 hours per week, Wednesday to Friday)

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing a confidential and professional business support service across all Planning functions

  • Acting as a first point of contact for public, business and stakeholder enquiries via telephone, email and in person

  • Providing procedural and technical information or signposting enquiries to the appropriate officers or agencies

  • Issuing standard correspondence and updating planning systems, portals and registers

  • Operating manual and computerised information systems to input, extract and report on data

  • Supporting planning appeals, property certificate requests and investigation files

  • Organising and attending internal and multi-agency meetings, including minute-taking and follow-up actions

  • Assisting with the preparation of reports, returns, registers and marketing materials

  • Maintaining effective file management systems, both electronic and hard copy

  • Processing payments, maintaining ledgers, administering petty cash and raising purchase orders

  • Supporting inventory control, stock checks and procurement activity

  • Providing reception and general office cover as required to support business continuity

  • Assisting with continuous improvement of business support systems, procedures and policies

  • Developing and maintaining working knowledge of Planning services and practices

The Person

Essential Criteria

  • A minimum of 5 GCSEs (Grades A-C), including English and Mathematics, or equivalent
    OR the ability to demonstrate a minimum of 3 years' relevant experience in a busy office or professional environment

  • At least 1 year's relevant Business Support or administrative experience, including:

    • Use of computerised information management systems

    • Delivering front line customer service to the public or external organisations

    • Managing high volumes of work and competing priorities

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook

  • Strong organisational and workload management skills

  • Ability to work accurately, confidentially and with minimal supervision

  • A customer-focused approach with strong communication skills
